Setting Up “Free Product” (BOGO) Discounts to Increase AOV

The Free Product discount (commonly known as Buy One Get One or BOGO) is one of the most effective ways to clear inventory and increase your Average Order Value (AOV). By encouraging customers to buy a specific quantity to unlock a free item, you increase the total number of items per transaction.

Here is how to configure this feature in wiseCampaign.

Step 1: Create a New Free Product Discount

4
  1. Navigate to wiseCampaign > Discount Manager.
  2. Click the Add New button.
  3. In the selection popup, choose the Free products card and click Create.

Step 2: Configure the BOGO Logic

2 free products

Under the Discount Rules section, you will define the “Free Products discount” parameters:

  • Paid Quantity: Enter the number of items the customer must purchase (e.g., “2”).
  • Free Quantity: Enter the number of items they receive for free (e.g., “1”).

In this example, setting Paid: 2 and Free: 1 creates a “Buy 2, Get 1 Free” offer.

Step 3: Customize Visibility & Conditions

To ensure your customers know about the deal, configure the following Conditions & Display Rules:

3 free products
  • Applies To Which Products? Decide if the offer is sitewide, limited to specific categories, or only for high-margin products.
  • Sale Badge: Enable this to display a “BUY 2, GET 1 FREE” badge directly on your product images in the shop gallery.
  • Product Page Content: Add a compelling message in the editor (e.g., “Special Offer: Buy 3, Get 1 Free!”). This message will appear in a prominent blue notification box on the individual product page.
  • Cart Notice: Toggle this on to remind users in the cart how many more items they need to add to trigger the free product.

Once you are satisfied with the settings, click Save Discount. You will see the window below.

Why This Increases AOV

  • Psychological Incentive: The word “Free” is a powerful motivator. Customers who intended to buy only one item are much more likely to purchase two if it means they receive a third at no cost.
  • Higher Unit Count: Even though you are giving away a product, the total cash spent per customer session increases as they reach for the “Paid Quantity” threshold.
  • Inventory Velocity: This strategy is perfect for moving stock quickly while maintaining a higher total transaction value than a standard percentage discount.

Tip: Use the For Which Users? setting to offer these BOGO deals exclusively to “Logged-in” customers or specific “Customer Roles” to build brand loyalty.
